1. Clean & Purify Your Home (Shuddhikaran)

Diwali cleaning is very important. It is believed that goddess Lakshmi Embrace cleanliness. Hence, cleaning each and every corner of the house is important. Apart from this, sprinkle Holy Water or Gangajal (Pure Water of River Ganga) all over so as to cleanse the atmosphere and surroundings.

2. Setting Place For Pooja

The next thing is to set a platform (Aasan) for goddess Lakshmi. For that, find a good-clean place in your house. Search for a table or any high raised stage/platform to place the Idol of Goddess Lakshmi. Spread a clean red cloth over the table and keep a bunch of grains in the middle of it.

Note: Make sure the place is clean. It is also advised to sprinkle a few drops of Gangajal around the table.

3. Place Kalash (Kalash Sthapana)

Put the Kalash (Silver/Bronze Pot) over the bunch of grains. Make sure to fill the Kalash with 70-75% of water and put a Supari (Betel Nut), a Marigold flower, a Coin, and some Rice Grains in it. Arrange 5 mango leaves and place them over the mouth of the Kalash in a circle.

4. Place Idols Of Lakshmi And Ganesha (Murti Sthapana)

Place the idol of Goddess Lakshmi on the left and idol of Lord Ganesha on the right (from the viewer’s perspective). Arrange a Pooja Thali (Plate) and put some rice grains and coins in that Thali and place it in front of the idol.

5. Apply Tilak And Lit Diya

Apply tilak to the Idols of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesh and to the Kalash. Now, light a Diya and place it in a thali alongside with some Haldi (Turmeric), Kumkum (Red Powder), and Rice Grains.

6. Place Accounts Books/Wealth Related Items

Now place your business/accounts books and other wealth/business-related items like money, jewelry, wallet, etc… near the idols of goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh.

7. Offer Flowers And Recite Puja Mantra

Now keep some flowers in your palm and join your hands to chant Diwali Pooja Mantra. After that offer these flowers to the Idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh.

8. Clean Lakshmi Idol

Take the Idol of Goddess Lakshmi and wash it with clean water pursued by Panchamrita. Clean it again with water and wipe it with a clean fabric and place it back close to Lord Ganesh Idol.

9. Offer Flower’s Mala (Garland)

Arrange or make a fresh Flower Mala (Garland) and put it around the neck of Lakshmi Ji and Ganesh Ji. Now, do tilak with Haldi, Kumkum, and some Rice Grains and burn Agarbatti and Dhoop (Incense Stick) in front of them.

10. Offer Fruits And Sweets

Offer fresh fruits and sweets to both the gods. Arrange Paan (Areca Leaf) and put some Laung (Cloves), a Supari (Betel Nut), and a Coconut on it and offer it to the goddess.

11. Perform Lakshmi Aarti

Take a Diya (Deepam or Lamp) in a Thaali (Plate), a pooja bell in one hand and perform the Lakshmi Aarti (Prayer). Once Aarti is finished, everyone should bow down on knees to take blessings from the goddess. Also, youngers should take blessings from their elders by touching their feet.

12. Lit Diyas In House

Usually, the Diya’s should be lit during Lakshmi Aarti and later put on each side of the house and the significant spots like the Sacred Tulsi plant. A Diya is lit on the Kalash as well and is intended to be lit for the entire night of Diwali.
